Camp Lejenue VD

Camp Lejeune Background Info

From 1953-1987 the residents of Camp Lejeune relied on drinking water drawn from groundwater supply wells. This water, however, was contaminated by the Government. As a result, Marines, their families, other service personnel and the Camp Lejeune community were exposed to contaminated water and toxic vapors which found their way into the Base’s drinking water supply. Marines and their families living at Camp Lejeune, together with base employees and visitors, were given water for drinking and bathing that was contaminated with these lethal toxins:

(i)           Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC), including trichloroethylene (TCE);

(ii)          (ii) tetrachloroethene (PCE), referred to as perchloroethylene or “Perc”;

(iii)         (iii) Vinyl Chloride (VC); and

(iv)         (iv) Benzene.

Each of these chemicals is considered a chlorinated hydrocarbon, commonly used as an industrial solvent, i.e., a degreaser or dry cleaning solvent.

Because of injuries to those drinking the water at Camp Lejeune, and coupled with extensive investigations by various government agencies, the presence of these toxic chemicals in significant and very dangerous quantities was finally confirmed.
